Ferntree Gully News repackaged: from newsprint to beautiful book.

I am delighted to announce the publication of Ferntree Gully News, Scenes and Stories, 2009-17.

This book is a selection of stories and photographs sourced from the first 50 issues of the newspaper. It is a uniquely drafted portrait of people, individuals and groups, in a special place and time.

My photographs have appeared in every issue of the paper since its inception in 2009. The high standard of the production enhances the many quality photographs that originally were published on newsprint.

Ferntree Gully News, Scenes and Stories, 2009-17 is published by Mountain District Learning Centre.

This beautiful book, priced at $15, is available from MDLC Office, 13-15 The Avenue, Ferntree Gully. Telephone: 03 9758 7859.

Women Photographers' Exhibition CONCEPTA

I am delighted to again take part in the annual women photographers' exhibition in Melbourne to celebrate International Women's Day and raise funds for UN Women.

Now, in its 8th year, this year's exhibition is titled CONCEPTA.

"Abstract photography focuses on the simplest elements of artistic expression: form, light, colour. The viewer may not see the whole subject within the photograph. In an abstract, the subject is often only a small part of the idea of the image."

CONCEPTA was formally opened by Laura Napolitano, Director of the Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne on 4 March 2018.

Belgrave Survival Day 2018

The annual Belgrave Survival Day is held on Australia Day 26 January. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples mark this day as Survival Day.

In the town of Belgrave in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, Australia, the event, now in its 11th year, promotes Indigenous culture and celebrates the survival of the oldest living culture in the world.

It is a wonderful family day and greatly supported by volunteers and the community.

I always make sure I do not miss this celebration. Here is a selection of my photos taken at Belgrave Survival Day 2018.

Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson performed Welcome to Country again this year. He spoke of the responsibility that comes with being welcomed to country and reminded all of the importance of caring for the land.

Aurelio Denasha, Ojibwe Native American, was a speaker and performer of song and dance on the day.

As in previous years the Djirri Djirri Dance Group led by Mandy Nicholson performed traditional songs and dances with Damien Nicholson on didgeridoo.
