Journeys

The 14th annual Women Photographers' exhibition is now open at Magnet Galleries Melbourne until 24 February 2024.

The opening was a wonderful event with music and many of the participating photographers attending.

'Journeys' is the theme for the 2024 exhibition. Interpretation was open to the photographer.

Traditionally the annual Women Photographers' exhibition is a fundraiser and this year it will benefit the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

One of my three photographs in the show titled 'Early morning arrival at Station Pier' is a large-scale work (1.2m wide), expertly printed on Sihl baryta satin paper by Photonet Fine Art Printing.

Station Pier (formerly Railway Pier) has heritage status. It has been operating for over 160 years in both war and peace - from the arrivals for the Gold Rush in the mid-1850's to Australian troops leaving for war in the 1940s to generations of new migrants arriving by passenger ships. Today it is a cruise ship terminal.

The women photographers showing their works in the exhibition have interpreted the theme of journeys widely. Please come and visit. I will be in the gallery on Saturday 17 February from 2  - 4pm.

ANOTHER YEAR IN FERNTREE GULLY

In 2012 with the support of Ferntree Gully News, Mountain District Learning Centre and Knox City Council I was proud to have a photographic exhibition titled 'A Year in Ferntree Gully' at Ferntree Gully Library, The Hut Gallery and other venues.

I am thrilled to show 'Another Year in Ferntree Gully'. This time the exhibition is being held in the magnificent historic Miller's Homestead in Boronia.

Ferntree Gully News editor Anne Boyd and I have chosen to exhibit a selection of my photographs that were taken and published in 2022.

Everyone is welcome to visit 'A Year in Ferntree Gully' during Miller's Homestead opening hours

CIRCLES - Women Photographers' Exhibition

The Women Photographers' exhibition CIRCLES opens on International Women's Day 8 March 2023 at Magnet Galleries in Melbourne.

I am delighted to participate again in Magnet's annual fundraiser for UN Women.

In 2023 the theme is CIRCLES. Interpretation can be literal, figurative, physical, psychological - the photographer's choice.

Head On Photo Festival: AddOn 2022

I am delighted to participate again in the annual  Head On Festival group show 'AddOn'.

This non competitive, anonymous, photographic exhibition is one of the core events of the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney, Australia. It is curated by Charles McKean and Festival Director Moshe Rosenzveig.

'AddOn' 2022 will be displayed in the Yalagang Room in the brand-new Bondi Pavilion.

Miracle: A piece of Ferntree Gully in the Docklands

I am grateful Ferntree Gully News attended the opening of MIRACLE, an exhibition of photographs by Pam Davison, Sue Jackson, Margot Sharman and myself. Thank you to Meg Hellyer for reporting on the show.

'Since the first year of Gully News Barbara Oehring’s photographs have captured moments that make our community special. Recently her photos brought a little piece of Ferntree Gully to the Docklands. An exhibition held at Magnet Galleries at District Docklands featured the work of Melbourne photographers Pam Davison, Sue Jackson, Margot Sharman and Barbara Oehring. Entitled ‘Miracles’ the photographs paid homage to the simple miracles surrounding us every day in homes, and neighbourhoods. Each image showed that even in the toughest of times there is always beauty around and something to be grateful for.

Corhanwarrabul: Dances of Reconnection - Wurundjeri Culture

 It felt good to document a live event again after the long lockdown in Melbourne.

The occasion was a Wurundjeri dance workshop and walk led by Wurundjeri Head Man (Ngurungaeta), Murrundindi.

We gathered on Saturday afternoon on December 4 at Trig Track Kalorama, one of the many areas of Corhanwarrabul (the Dandenong Ranges) devastated by the extreme storms of June 2021.

This event - organised by BodyPlace Project and supported by a Storm Recovery grant from Regional Arts Victoria - was devised to help the Corhanwarrabul community recover, re-engage and learn to live with the damaged environment.

From the Trig Track meeting place Murrundindi took us on a Cultural Connections walk after which he held a very happy and engaging Wurundjeri dance workshop.

Head On Photo Festival 2021

I always look forward to the invitation to participate in the 'AddOn' exhibition of the Head On Photo Festival.

In 2021, its 11th year, the non-competitive, anonymous photographic exhibition curated by Charles McKean and Festival Director Moshe Rosenzveig OAM is shown at Bondi Beach Promenade.

STAGES: LIFE IN LOCKDOWN

During the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown in Melbourne in 2020 I was delighted to take part in an online exhibition titled 5km Radius at Magnet Galleries. This exhibition can still be enjoyed in virtual gallery five at Magnet  https://magnet.org.au/gallery/5km-radius/

Due to the global pandemic Melbourne is again experiencing restrictions.

Photographs of life in lockdown are a great cultural record of the pandemic.

I responded to a callout by Monash Gallery of Art for a photo of personal experience of lockdown and I am delighted that my submission was successful.

During Lockdown in 2020 I spent much time in my garden watching wildlife. I observed birds, studied their behaviour and took photographs. Processing my images was another endeavour that gave me pleasure while staying home.

International Women's Day Exhibition in Melbourne

I am delighted to show some new works in the 11th annual women photographers' exhibition at Magnet Galleries.

The theme UNA (United Nations of Australia) promises a diversity of cultures. I had the pleasure of photographing Sri Lankan born writer Prasadini Nanayakkara who has made her home in Melbourne.

The exhibition will be open from 25 February to 27 March.

Stage four Covid-19 restrictions with a 5km travel zone have been in effect in Melbourne since

2 August 2020.

I am delighted to take part in an online gallery exhibition documenting the 2020 Melbourne Lockdown.

As a supporter and photography contributor of my local Ferntree Gully News for more than ten years I  would like to share this.

Love in a time of corona virus

One aim of Ferntree Gully News is to celebrate the good news of people and groups in Ferntree Gully – from the Mountain Gate up into the Dandenong Ranges.

We thought this issue was to be a celebration of community events over the summer and a packed list of What’s On this autumn.

How wrong we were.

Not wrong to celebrate the summer festivals, though now they seem like a precious dream. And beautiful spaces sit empty under the autumn sun.

Ferntree Gully News was launched in September 2009 soon after the Black Saturday bush fires. In the editorial of issue No.1 we said

‘Those who deal with international disasters report that places with strong community links survive better in an emergency than those without such links. An important element in strengthening a community is a volunteer newspaper where people can share the good news stories and initiatives that make Ferntree Gully a safe and beautiful place be.‘

Now, as pandemic looms, no longer so safe. Instead this is the time to draw on our deepest community resources, our connections and concerns for each other. Although the doors to community premises are closed and public gatherings to be avoided, we can still think about those around us and use imagination to offer support and encouragement.

So far at least we still have the chance to walk, to hear birdsong and to see the clash of myriad colours as the singers dart amongst the trees.

10th Annual Women Photographers' Exhibition

I am delighted to again take part in the annual Women Photographers' Exhibition for International Women's Day in Melbourne.

The 10th exhibition, a retrospective titled Memento, is held at Magnet Galleries The District Docklands from 13 February to 8 March 2020.

As always I am happy to be involved in a fundraising photography show. In view of the bushfire situation across Australia this year's show is a fundraiser for Bushfire Relief.

I have picked a favourite work of the 2018 Concepta women photographers' exhibition. In addition I show a new photograph printed by Photonet Fine Art Printing on exquisite paper from recycled Indian silk.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

I celebrated NAIDOC Week 2019 with a variety of events offered by my local Council.

NAIDOC Week is held annually in Australia in July. It is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.

This year's theme
VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. LET'S WORK TOGETHER FOR A SHARED FUTURE.
acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia's democracy.

During NAIDOC Week I attended several events held at Knox Community Arts Centre including a musical theatre performance of THE SAPPHIRES and a film screening of WARRIGAL CREEK MASSACRE followed by a panel discussion.

On a cold and wet Friday I spent a very enjoyable afternoon at the Knox Community Arts Centre listening to MISSION SONGS performed as a quartet by Jessie Lloyd on guitar, Kristel Kickett, Candice Lorrae and Rob Mahoney on double bass.

The MISSION SONGS PROJECT is an initiative to revive contemporary Australian Indigenous songs from 1900 to 1999. Jessie Lloyd, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musician, has travelled Australia in search of hidden songs. Prof Marcia Langton AM and Archie Roach AM are the project Patrons and Advisors.

Following last Friday's wonderful performance we had a chance to meet the singers in the foyer.
